This crochet bib is handy for small babies, because you don't need to keep the baby's head lifted while you snap the bib. It doesn't have strings which can cause a choking hazard if it gets stuck on the high chair, so is safer than a bib with ties.


I hope you enjoy the free pattern. Crochet several and save them for future baby showers and gifts for the newborn.

                               Side Snap Baby Bib

Materials

About 2 oz of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn for Main Color or any 4-ply cotton weight yarn. I used the color Beach Ball Blues. Small amount of contrasting 4-ply worsted weight cotton yarn.

2 Small pieces of Velcro or 1 set of snaps

Size H Aluminum Hook

Size

Fits up to 6 months

Gauge

14 sc = 4”, 8 rows = 4”

Ch      Chain

Sc      Single Crochet

Tog    Together

Instructions

Starting at the bottom of the bib, ch 16.

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (15 sc)

Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each sc across to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. (17 sc)

Row 3: Repeat Row 2. (19 sc)

Row 4: Repeat Row 2. (21 sc)

Row 5 – 20: Work even.

Row 21: Sc in first 7 sc. Ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Row 22: Work first 2 sc tog, 1 sc in next 5 sc. Ch 1, turn. (6 sc)

Row 23: Work first 2 sc together, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, work last 2 sc tog. Ch 1, turn. (4 sc)

Row 24: Work even.

Row 25: Work first 2 sc tog, work last 2 sc tog. (2 sc)

End off Main Color and work in ends.

Strap

Row 1: Go back to Row 21. Skip 7 sts in the middle of the bib from where you have just been working. JAttach yarn in next sc, sc in last remaining 7 sc.  Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Work even.

Row 3: Work first 2 sc tog. Sc in next 3 sc. Work last 2 sc together. Ch 1, turn.(5 sc)

Rows 4 – 8: Work even. Ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Row 9: Work 1 sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, work last 2 sc tog. Ch 1, turn. (4 sc)

Row 10: Sc in first 3 sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Row 11: Work even.

Row 12: Sc in first 3 sc, work last 2 sc tog. Ch 1, turn.  (4 sc)

Row 13: Work 2 sc in first sc, work even across 4 sc. Ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Row 14: 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. (6 sc)

Row 15: Work even.

Row 16: Sc in first 4 sc, work last 2 sc tog. Ch 1, turn.  (5 sc)

Row 17 - 18: Work even

Row 19: Sc in each sc across to last sc. 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. (6 sc)

Row 20-21: Work even.

Row 22: Sc in each sc across to last 2 sc. Work last 2 sc tog. Ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Row 23-25: Work even.                             

Row 26: Work first 2 sc tog, 1 sc in next sc, work last 2 sc tog. (3 sc)

If using a contrasting color for edging, end off main color now and work in ends.

Edging

Join contrasting color in any stitch. Sc in each st and row around bib. End off and work in ends.

Sew a small piece of Velcro to each end of the strap.
